I am a philosopher based in Tarndanya/Adelaide at Adelaide University, formerly the University of Adelaide. I am editor-in-chief of the Australasian Journal of Philosophy and founding editor of the Gavin David Young Lectures in Philosophy.
My research is mainly in ‘theoretical’ philosophy: metaphysics, epistemology and philosophy of science, philosophy of logic and language, philosophy of probability, and philosophy of physics. I also have research interests in philosophy of religion, decision theory and philosophy of economics, and the history of philosophy (where I have particular enthusiasm for Aristotle, Cavendish, and Hume). I teach and supervise across my areas of research. I have been privileged to supervise some very talented philosophers, and am always happy to talk to prospective applicants for our postgraduate programs in philosophy.
I am grateful to have been awarded grants to support my research from the ARC, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the AHRC, and the Whiting Foundation. I am currently (2020–26) chief investigator on an ARC Discovery Project entitled Everything in its Place on persistence and location.
Before coming to Adelaide, I taught in the Faculty of Philosophy at Oxford from 2004–13, where I was also a fellow of Exeter College. I took my PhD at Princeton and I was an undergraduate at Melbourne.
I live in inner north-west Adelaide with my partner Lizzie Maughan, a sociology/education researcher, and our two kids. Other interests include hiking and camping, cycling, listening, and reading.
